What is fluoride?
Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found in bones and teeth, as well as soil, plants, rocks, and some freshwater sources. This includes lakes, rivers, and, less frequently, oceans. Fluoride is also a major ingredient in many dental products, from toothpaste to supplements.
Fluoride has been shown to remineralise tooth enamel, the outer layer of your teeth. By strengthening enamel, fluoride is effective at preventing cavities, tooth decay, and the growth of oral bacteria. For these reasons, many local governments around the world add a small amount of fluoride to their water supply.
Why wouldn't someone use fluoride?
If fluoride has all these oral health benefits, why would someone opt for fluoride-free products? There are actually some drawbacks to fluoride, such as it being a neurotoxin that's dangerous to ingest in high doses. Swallowing an excessive amount of fluoride can lead to painful conditions like dental fluorosis or skeletal fluorosis.
This is more of a concern for kids rather than adults as children sometimes swallow their toothpaste if not taught proper brushing techniques. However, there's also a small subset of the population that's allergic to fluoride, making fluoride-free dental products a must.
